A pair of seascape collages crafted from pink and blue Rowlux, a glistening prismatic plastic, are unbelievably tacky and truly weird. They may be the only works in the entire exhibition nearly unrecognizable as Lichtensteins. And finally, theres Three Landscapes, the only film Lichtenstein ever made, a hypnotic, semiotic, bobbing triptych of sea and sky views separated by heavy black horizon lines. (The film is on view in a separate gallery, in the Modern Wing.) Its easy to understand how Lichtenstein could have created these kinetic works, and even easier to understand why he only made a few. These are thrilling discoveries, and rare to stumble across in a major exhibition on a familiar artist.

The nudes that the artist made in the mid-90s, and which he was still at work on when he died, are also peculiar. But they have none of the one-off, try-anything quality that animates those early experiments in technology. On the contrary, Lichtenstein was at the end of his career so much the master of his chosen form that he seems to have found no choice but to subvert it. The canvases unsettle, and not just because its hard to contemplate the brazen objectification of women. Overstuffed interior settings confuse, with mirrors, artwork and window views hard to differentiate. Colors and lines switch precariously. Most startling of all, the artists trademark dots come unhinged. They dont define skin tone naturalistically or even attractively, instead suggesting the proliferation of disease and an equivalence between the surfaces of bodies and furnishings.

This is whats considered a late style. Picasso had one, so did Beethoven. Lichtenstein appears to have had more than one. During the same period when he was working on the nudes, Lichtenstein was also painting a series of small, witty abstractions and another of immense, virtuosic landscapes in the style of the Song Dynasty, which ruled China from 960 to 1279. As much a stylist as ever, he got classical ink painting down to a code reproducible in dots and dashes. And then, for the first time in 31/2 decades, he swept broad, florid brush strokes across the canvas.

You can do that when youre 73, even if youve spent the previous 35 years undoing exactly that. But Lichtenstein was also a stylist to the last those brush strokes arent a mad final burst of expressionism. They make great fog, and fog clings to the mountains in Song Dynasty ink paintings.

Romania Won’t Cut Rates as Political Turmoil Sinks Leu

Romania’s central bank will
probably refrain from cutting its benchmark interest rate for a
fifth consecutive meeting after the government collapsed for a
second time this year, sending the leu to a record low, analysts
from London to Bucharest said.

The Banca Nationala a Romaniei may keep its monetary policy
rate unchanged at 5.25 percent at a meeting on May 2, according
to economists from Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Capital
Economics Ltd. and Banca Comerciala Romana SA. The median
estimate of a Bloomberg survey of 17 economists was for a
quarter-point cut before the Prime Minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu a no-confidence vote in parliament on April 27.

The turmoil triggered a sell-off in the country’s currency,
which fell to an all-time low against the euro today and may
force Romanian policy makers to shield the leu by keeping rates
unchanged after lowering borrowing costs one percentage point to
boost faltering economic growth.

“Given Romania’s heavy burden of foreign-exchange debt,
the exchange rate is a critical factor in the National Bank’s
decision process,” Neil Shearing, chief emerging-markets
economist at Capital Economics in London, wrote in a note to
clients on April 27. “It remains unclear as to how events will
pan out over the next few days, but it seems unlikely that
policy makers will cut rates with so much uncertainty about the
political backdrop.”

Leu Falls

The leu depreciated as much as 0.5 percent to a record low
of 4.4140 per euro at 2:22 pm in Bucharest today, the biggest
intra day slump since Feb. 20. The benchmark BET index slid as
much as 0.4 percent to 5,311.00 today.

Governments are crumbling across the European Union as
German Chancellor Angela Merkel pushes for austerity to prevent
the euro area from breaking up and a debt crisis from spreading.
The ouster of Ungureanu took place as the International Monetary
Fund and the European Union were reviewing the country’s
progress under a precautionary-loan accord.

President Traian Basescu moved to limit the turmoil after
the no-confidence vote designating Victor Ponta, the head of the
opposition Social Democrats, as Prime Minister, giving him 10
days to draw up his governing plan. Ponta said April 28 he will
announce his proposed 20-member Cabinet on May 1 and may seek a
vote of confidence in Parliament on May 7.

‘Reasonably Stable’

The government collapse “will put some pressure on the
currency and we think the national bank will continue to make
sure the currency remains reasonably stable,” said Raffaella Tenconi, an economist at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in
London. ‘It may delay the rate cut the consensus is expecting.”

The Social Democrats and Liberals toppled Unugureanu’s
government with 235 votes in favor of toppling the
administration, four more than the 231 needed to oust the
Cabinet in the 460-member legislature.

Ungureanu was unable to fend off defections in the former
ruling coalition in his first no-confidence motion. His
predecessor, Emil Boc, survived 10 such votes before he stepped
down Feb. 6 to ease political and social pressure stemming from
anti-austerity nationwide protests.

Romania, which secured a 5 billion-euro ($6.61 billion)
precautionary loan from the IMF and the EU in 2011 to protect it
from the debt crisis, is trying to reassure investors it will
keep fiscal discipline and cut the budget deficit to 1.9 percent
of gross domestic product this year after 4.4 percent in 2011.
It hasn’t drawn any funds so far.

Those chandeliers going into the gallery is a big deal, allows Bill McDowell, 54, the open-collared, sometimes hard-hatted project executive for the Barnes Foundations new Benjamin Franklin Parkway campus, who seems impossibly relaxed for a man who has until Tuesday to turn the building over to its staff.

Despite his demeanor, its tense, he says. Every day is tense. Ive never worked on a project of such good quality. These are all unique details.

They are down to the last thousand or so of the 5,000 items on the Barnes punchlist. McDowell and staff have been waiting months for these hanging gallery fixtures to be finished. Cross that one off.

Lillis, who had a baby in the middle of coordinating the big move from suburban Merion to the Parkway, took three months off and returned 10 months ago, she said, to twice as much responsibility on both ends. But shes unfazed by a job that inspires awe at its scope and envy of its venue. My husband said this morning: Oh youre going to hang out in the gallery today. What a shame, she said with a smile.

About 98 percent of the 800 paintings had been hung by midweek last week, but a fair number of the 2,500 objects also moved from Merion – metalwork, chairs, chests, other furniture, African sculpture, redware, jewelry – still await final placement, said a besieged but cordial Andrew Stewart, director of public relations. Stewart is juggling media requests from down the street, across the country, and beyond, trying to find time to write news releases, like the one with details of the 1st and Fresh/Marc Vetri food-service operation in the building.
