On July 5th, The New England Journal of Medicine published an article regarding the difficulties and the delays associated with diagnosing problems associated with metal on metal hip implants.

Over half a million Americans received metal on metal hip implants, which doctors believed would be stronger than the traditional ceramic or plastic prosthetics. Recently, it came to light that these metal on metal devices had a high early failure rate compared to implants made of alternative material.

Surgeons started using metal on metal implants in 2003. Its been almost a decade, and the FDA is just now starting the investigate the safety of these devices? Why is that? Why was there such a delay in investigating the safety of metal on metal hip implants?

These devices were approved under the FDAs 510(k) rule, which requires device manufacturers to prove they are substantially similar to devices already on the market to gain approval. There was no pre-market study with these devices prior to FDA approval. Once one device got on the market, it opened up the flood gates for the rest. Following the recalls of popular devices such as Johnson amp; Johnsons DePuy ASR and Pinnacle devices, the FDA began receiving adverse event reports from several other manufacturers. This lead the FDAs May 2011 Order for Post Market Study.

It Is very difficult to assess Post Market Studies. There is no set protocol in place for this type of study. To develop one, would be very time consuming to the FDA, and would require a large amount of resources. Thus, the studies are not conducted by the FDA, rather the device manufacturers themselves. Many critics are skeptical of what the results will be. Parameters and results could possibly be manipulated to show a favorable view of data that would prove otherwise since there is no incentive for the manufactures to produce information proving their device is faulty.

The fact that it is not an organized study, and the individual manufacturers are producing results that they see fit makes it difficult to study the safety and effectiveness of metal on metal hip implants as a whole. Different interpretations of data, reported differently could make one device seem more effective than another when that might not really be the case. Should one manufacturer choose to be dishonest and report false data, that device might be deemed safer than the competitors, when in reality it could be more dangerous.

Perhaps, the one universal component of the study, is the biggest flaw. The FDA could only order the manufacturers to survey the devices for 3 years. These devices generally are said to have a lifetime of 15 years. The five year mark is the cut off for early failure. Devices that will fail in year 4 or year 5, will not be counted in the study as an early failure rate. Thus, any ineffective device that can make it past the 3 year mark, will be deemed as effective.

The New England Journal of Medicine offered a few recommendations that could help make the study more of a success. The main suggestion was collaboration between the FDA and the manufacturers to establish a protocol land the ability for the FDA to ensure the manufacturers are initiating the study in a timely manner. The Second suggestion was harmonized study methods for the multiple manufactures that would include a cross-product data pool. Lastly, the industry itself needs an infrastructure improvement. The creation of a comprehensive national device registry with unique identifiers will give data systems the ability to talk to each other. Something like this would allow for the tracking and comparison of devices.

The NEJM is on the right track. Something needs to be done. The Manufacturers should not have as much control over these studies. Independent cross-product studies are the best way to measure the effectiveness of the market as a whole, as well as the individual devices.

1. I work in the mall and smell delicious food all day. How can I curb my craving?
Jen via the Internet

The smell of warm pretzels, gooey cinnabuns, and buttery popcorn can set you up for a major craving. Fortunately, researchers at Wheeling Jesuit University have found a way to counteract the cravings. The solution is sniffing peppermint.

The study had volunteers sniff peppermint every two hours or do nothing. The peppermint sniffers were not as hungry as non-sniffers and they ate 2,800 fewer calories in a week. Thats enough to lose close to one pound each week.

Researchers say the peppermint distracts you from your hunger pains and as a result you eat less.

In addition peppermint could help control emotional eating. Now, eating peppermint candy or chewing peppermint gum does NOT work as well. It is best to buy peppermint oil and dab it on your wrist so you can easily sniff it or buy a peppermint inhaler for about ten bucks.

Check online or in nutrition stores for either product. Studies did not use a peppermint candle but maybe that would work too.

Doesnt peppermint also help with exercise?

Yes. Studies show that athletes perform better if they sniff peppermint. They were more motivated, exercised longer and harder, and were less fatigued when they sniffed peppermint.

2. I just saw a quick report on avoiding BPA in pregnancy. How do I avoid it?
Karen in West Springfield

According to a study just published in the journal Pediatrics, girls exposed before birth to high levels of BPA which is an estrogen-like chemical , are more likely to be anxious, depressed and hyperactive at age 3.

Boys behavior was unaffected by BPA. Researchers found BPA in the urine of more than 97% of the 240 pregnant women studied, as well as 97% of their children. BPA is found in plastic bottles, medical equipment, dental sealants, receipt paper, and the lining of cans.

To minimize your exposure look for cans and bottles that say BPA – free. Avoid plastic with the numbers 3 or 7 in the recycle symbol.

(the “Company”) announced today
F.I.T.T. Energy Products Inc. (“F.I.T.T.”), a non-affiliated operating
partner, has begun discussions with its medical experts, key investors,
attorneys and media partners to identify a large pharmaceutical or
beverage partner to rollout “F.I.T.T. Energy With Resveratrol” energy
shot to the retail market. The decision to accelerate the rollout was
based on positive preliminary results of its recently completed double
blind crossover study testing the impact on resting blood pressure of
ingesting F.I.T.T. Energy versus two leading competitors’ products.

The study concentrated on changes in systolic and diastolic blood

The recent increase in the price of kerosene has generated a lot  reactions from Nigerians, this increment being  the highest so far in the history of the product in the country. The price went from N450 per gallon to an outrageous N1400 within a period of two weeks, amounting to 300 per cent increment on the product.

Studies have shown that over nine million (9,000,000) litres of kerosene is being used daily by Nigerians,   mainly for household purposes. Being an oil -producing country, Nigeria is supposed to have Kerosene in abundance. But the reverse is the case, as the price of kerosene has not been stable in the recent past. Many marketers have been hiding under the guise of scarcity to sell at outrageous price, in order to make mouth-watering  profit , while  tankers  drivers divert  the product  and sell to  roadside surface dealers. These are some of the reasons why kerosene is hardly available at fuel stations across the country.

If marketers are not hoarding the product, they  sell at higher prices, and this has added to the suffering of the  masses. It is pathetic that many households now resort to the use of charcoal, firewood and sawdust for domestic cooking. One wonders why and what could have culminated in this outrageous increase in the price of this essential commodity.

However, the question on the lips of the masses is, what is President Goodluck Jonathan doing about this, and what has he to offer us as dividends  of democracy?

Could the increment be as a result of political dispensation that has just come to an end, with emergence of new administrators that are not used to the system or due to sabotage?

It is sad that while the government is trying its best to make life meaningful for the masses, some cabal at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) are doing their best in compounding the problems of Nigerians by refusing to release kerosene to the prospective marketers.

Century Iron Mines Corporation is a Toronto based mineral exploration and Development Company with prominent iron ore assets in the provinces of Quebec and Newfoundland Labrador, Canada. A Qualifying was completed on May 18 2011 concurrently with financings totaling USD 115.5 million.

The financings included a USD 60.9 million investment by Wuhan Iron Steel for a 24.99% interest in Century Iron and a USD 12.2 million investment by MinMetals for a 5% interest. Both WISCO and MinMetals are ranked amongst the Forbes Global 500 and are among Chinas largest mining companies.

Century Iron has secured strong strategic partnerships in perhaps the worlds most import iron ore market through WISCO and MinMetals. WISCO is committed to assist in 70% of future project CAPEX debt financing with about 60% of the remainder to be financed by either company. In addition, 70% of the mined product is be pre sold: 60% goes to WISCO and MinMetals takes 10%.

Century Iron aims to become one of Canada largest iron ore producers- China is crucial to those plans. The Middle Kingdom accounted for 627 Mt of crude steel production in 2009, 44.3% of global steel production. Its insatiable appetite for steel drove 2010 iron ore spot prices to record levels. Continued economic growth and need for housing and infrastructure will further drive demand. Growing income and urbanization will help maintain a positive outlook in foreseeable future. Selling to China therefore is a must for any business seeking international growth.

On Century Iron side is a management team with experience in mining and the capital markets. This is particular true of Director and Chief Executive Officer Sandy Chin who has deep mining and trading experience. Needless to say his strong China connections are an invaluable asset to this China-focused company.

Primary land holdings consist of the Duncan Lake property, Attikamagan, and Sunny Lake; all located in Quebec. Together, resources including measured, indicated, and inferred are estimated to be over 852 million tons. The Duncan Lake Project is an advanced exploration stage property consisting of 125 mining claims over an area of about 5,500 hectares in the James Bay region of Quebec.

Century Iron has a 51% interest in the resource with an option to increase the stake to 65% from Augyva by expending an additional USD 14 million within five years. The companies will operate the project together under a joint venture. All resource estimates so far have been for Duncan Lake, leaving considerable room for upside as the earlier stage projects begin to progress.

Duncan Lake had been previously explored in 1973, though current resource estimates are from 10,461 meter drilling program in 2008 to 2009 totaling 52 boreholes. An internal logistics study is ongoing as well as a new 8000 meter drilling program. The site will produce iron concentrate and pellets as the final product. Studies show final iron concentrate to have an excellent grade of 65% to 69% purity.

Located in the Labrador Trough region is the Attikamagen property, an early-stage project comprised of approximately 946 mining claims covering about 31,000 hectares in an area of major iron formation. The property has thin overburden with visible outcrops with preliminary drilling showing the thickness of iron formation to be greater than 100 meters. There are five deposits on a 60 kilometres strike length. A 1,182 meter drilling program was completed in the Fall of 2010.

The company currently has the option to earn a 51% interest in the Champion property by making a USD 7.5 million in exploration expenditures by March 26 2012. This can be increased to 56% with an additional USD 2.5 million spent by March 26 2013 and further increased to a 60% interest by spending another USD 3.0 million by March 26 2014. As with the Duncan Lake project, Century Iron and Champion Minerals will operate the Attikamagen project under a JV agreement.

Sunny Lake is comprised of two groups of claims, together covering approximately 25,850 hectares. It was acquired in 2009 by staking for potential iron mineralization the property is in an area of major iron formation along strike with other major project. Century Iron is the 100% holder of this property. The area is in the boreal forest rising 600 to 700 meters above sea level.

Century Iron is moving quickly to take advantage of its iron resources. Financial backing and technical know-how from its large Chinese strategic partners will enable the company to accomplish this with minimal contribution of its own funds. Only 13% of requirements for capex into production will come from Century Iron. Yet it maintains control of all its projects.

Because both WISCO and MinMetals will become buyers of any Century Iron products, they have a vested interest in the Company in addition to their equity investments. This is especially true of WISCO, which has a significant 25% stake as well as a JV partnership with Century Iron. WISCO has contributed USD 120 million to the joint venture in exchange for a 40% interest in Century Irons share of Duncan Lake, Attkkamagen and Sunny Lake.

The success of Century Iron is tethered to the Chinese economy. If growth rates continue as predicted, the Company future looks bright. Of course, things can change quickly in tightly controlled economies, where production is dictated by government fiat. It is a risk for sure, but the reward is too great to pass up. China economy may face some hiccups, but the long-term trend looks to point up.

The phone company ATT brought many innovations to the world — phone operators, princess telephones, the Baby Bells – and also those monotone computer-generated voices you hear on the phone, computers and toys, sounding as unnatural as you could imagine. The name ATT gave to this product — Natural Voices Text-to-Speech – is either someones idea of a joke or a case of wishful thinking.

Those voices are not easy to take in long doses, says Gershon Silbert, CEO of Israeli startup Vivotext, which is developing a more human approach for text to speech (TTS).

There are many areas where more natural-sounding voices will have a major impact on the market, such as in interactive games, speech-enabled websites and audiobooks, says Silbert.

Today, just 1.2 percent of all books are recorded. This could be a multi-billion dollar industry, but you need expressiveness in order to make a book understandable, and currently the only way to provide that expressiveness is to hire humans to read and record books.

Existing TTS technologies from top players — ATT, Nuance, Loquendo and others — just wouldnt cut it with listeners. Nor would those phony voices impress game players, toy makers and motorists who want to listen to their email while driving.

Like comparing a Model-T to a Caddy

Enter Vivotext, Silberts expressive solution to natural-sounding artificial voices. Our text-to-speech technology is based on a multidisciplinary approach drawing on expertise from the fields of music performance analysis, phonetics, syntax, lexicography and digital signal processing [DSP], says Silbert. We have patents pending to cover our proprietary approach to expressiveness and the use of voice sample libraries.

Comparing Vivotext to ATT Natural Voice or Nuance Realspeak is like comparing a Model-T to the latest Cadillac, says Silbert. The older model is scratchy, bumpy and is barely functional, while the newer is smooth, rides like a whisper and features the latest technology.

Vivotext voices sound human because they are expressive. Our technology can add and adjust expressiveness to computerized voices, making them sound happy, sad, angry, calm, inquisitive – just like human voices, says Silbert.

Capturing every nuance of expression

The secret is based on music – specifically, the conversion of musical scores into human-like expressive performances – for the conversion of written text into natural-sounding speech. Just as variation in tempo, articulation and dynamics contribute to the effectiveness of a musical performance, speech attributes such as pitch, duration and amplitude are at the core of effective TTS, and are critical to conveying the full meaning of words and sentences.

Silbert knows music; he is a professional pianist who has cut several highly regarded albums. We apply methods developed for music performance, called MOR (music objects recognition) to speech synthesis, and the result is highly intelligible enunciation and natural flow in a variety of speaking styles.

Based on that technology, Vivotext has developed a large library of samples, applicable to any language, that allow programmers to load in a range of emotions to the voice. Vivotext derives basic expression automatically from the phonetic, semantic and syntactic analysis of the text — determining, for example, whether the sentence is a statement or question, simple or complex.

The analysis also takes into consideration additional expressive instructions provided by the use of punctuation, italics, underlining and capital letters. Expression is then determined by a speaking-style preference chosen from a menu. For example, the user can choose a deliberate style for news or an enthusiastic style for announcing the launch of a new product.

Major deals in the works

Studies have shown that the more closely consumers can relate to the artificial voices that speak from GPS devices, phone information services, websites, games, cell phones and remote controls, the higher their opinion of the product – and the more likely they are to spend money for the product or service associated with that voice.

The market for this is huge, with many billions at stake, says Silbert. We are the only ones who have succeeded in developing such an extensive human-like TTS, and the market is taking notice. Anyone who uses artificial voices in their products absolutely loves what we are doing.

Vivotext has two deals pending – one with a large US toy manufacturer and another with a major US audiobook publisher.

Based in the Mofet BYehuda incubator near Jerusalem, Vivotext is funded by the incubator and is working on a funding deal with several independent investors. The management team consists of Silbert, CTO Dr. Yossef Ben-Ezra and chairman Samuel H. Solomon.

All costs, whether sourcing, paperwork, storage space cost, or taxes and insurance should be considered to ensure the cost effective decisions is being made. Direct acquisition cost (price) is the most visible element of OEM purchasing cost. Too often it is the only consideration. There are a number of other elements of TPC which can have a major impact on product acquisition including all the activities required to insure production plans are achieved.

JL Haber, Vice President of Programming at Multi Media Productions, added, Falcon Metal Corporation is certainly responding to a major need in most industries today. We are excited to have them as a guest on our program.

ROCKVILLE (USA), 18.

The Middle Easts burgeoning aviation sector is becoming increasingly concerned about improving productivity and implementing environmentally sustainable technologies; a trend that highlights the regions development as one of the most sophisticated aviation hotspots across the globe, notes Juergen Strommer, Managing Director Cavotec Middle East. The Dubai-based company is the regional sales office of the Cavotec global engineering group.

We see our customers all over the region seeking to constantly enhance safety, efficiency and productivity. The demand for reliable, flexible and sustainable solutions illustrates a developing trend here. In the past, there was a tendency to install systems used elsewhere in the world in mature markets such as Europe. Increasingly however, we clearly see the Middle East as becoming the first region in the world to adopt new designs and products based on many parameters to suit local weather conditions, Strommer adds.

A classic example is the newly developed Cavotec Pre-Conditioned Air system (PCAir). This technology is used to supply cold, dry air to aircraft at sub-zero temperatures. Temperatures as low as minus 20deg;C (for dry air) are necessary to cool A380 (Code F) aircraft during the summers in the Gulf, a requirement that Cavotecs PCAir system alone is capable of meeting. Bahrain Airports Company, following comprehensive product studies and analyses, chose to implement this solution. We see similar interest from other major hubs in the region including Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait, Strommer says.

Another positive indication that the regions aviation sector is blossoming into a global leader is the continued expansion among airports in the Middle East. Airports in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia all have development plans ongoing and have largely avoided any impact from the recent global economic turndown.

Keeping their need for a greener and more productive ramp operation in mind, airports are increasingly embracing our pop-up pit solutions over conventional ground support equipment, Strommer says.

This has also enabled Airports to expand and improve their capacities. Our under-floor solutions reduce the number of trucks and service vehicles required to service aircraft, thus reducing accidents, emissions, and maintenance costs, Strommer explains. Cavotec now offers a wide range of solutions to the fuelling industry as well.

Three years ago, Cavotec acquired two leading aviation fuelling equipment manufacturers: Dabico (UK and US) and Meyerinck (Germany). These companies have been fully integrated into the Cavotec group, and are experiencing very healthy order bookings from Cavotec sales offices around the world, including the Middle East where we won a second significant contract with the New Muscat International Airport for Cavotec Dabico fuel hydrant pits, he says.

This contract follows an earlier AED 15 million deal with the New Muscat International Airport for pop-up pits.

The safety and ergonomic characteristics of Cavotecs fuelling products have won numerous new customers in the region.

In addition to orders for a large number of our pantograph units for loading and unloading trucks at various fuel farms recently, we have also supplied our one hand lift easy access covers to Doha, and we are expecting similar interest from other airports in the region.
