Photographer, art collector and numismatist Lance Dane passed away at a private hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday morning leaving behind a treasure trove of antiques, paintings and precious coins. He was 89.

The Australian-born art enthusiast had been living in India for decades collecting rare pieces from all over the country. In the absence of immediate family to look after the invaluable collection, this rich slice of Indias heritage needs urgent attention.

I have seen a large part of his collection. Its a national treasure and worth millions. The State should acquire it. You need to carry out due diligence and whoever is the custodian of it must honour this mans passion, Rajeev Sethi, noted designer and Mr. Danes friend told The Hindu on the phone.

Mr. Dane was a close associate of writer Mulk Raj Anand. He did the visual archive for the Festival of India. He has the largest collection of photographs by a single man ever and the largest collections of coins. He gave a large part of his collection to the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Mr. Sethi said.

He died without anybody

He was a helpless old man. He died without anybody. It is sad that his lifelong passion is not shared. It is lying without any care. I feel the effort should be made to [conserve it], Mr, Sethi said.

Old dusty paintings lay stashed away behind bookshelves, propped up against pieces of furniture and behind a solitary bed in Mr. Danes living room on Wednesday. Stone and wood sculptures were everywhere, on the floor, in every nook and corner of the room. The balcony was full of such antiques.

It was his dream to place his collection in a museum and we will do it. He wanted a numismatic [for his coin collection], Raju Bhatt, Mr. Danes foster son who arrived in Mumbai from Delhi told The Hindu.

His main intention was to give his collection back to the country. That was his primary goal. He wanted children and students to learn from it, a friend, who did not wish to be quoted, said.

Mr. Dane is understood to have agreed upon giving his coin collection to the Hinduja Foundation in Mumbai. However, his close associates, young men who stayed with him at his apartment in Mumbai and looked after him, said Mr. Dane was unhappy and felt that he was given the short shrift.

He [Mr. Dane] wanted his collection to be in a place where people can enjoy and learn, said Satish Gupta, a photographer who trained under Mr. Dane and has been living with him for years.

Another helper Sanjay Gejge said: He thought if he gave his collection to the Foundation, they would turn it into a museum. This very morning four persons came home to parcel off some art pieces.

Despite repeated attempts, the Foundation could not be reached for a comment. A representative of the IndusInd Bank, the Hinduja-owned private lender, present at the crematorium, did not comment on the matter.

Mr. Danes house itself resembles a mini-museum, where art works occupy much of the living space. However, the house is in a run-down condition and the pieces are uncared for.

This is really sad. One cannot do anything about it. The government must [pay heed], Mr. Sethi said.

The State government is learnt to have sent the police to guard the place till further measures are taken.

Nearly half of the 300 businesses will increase cloud spending on data protection measures over the next year, compared to only 14 percent who will cut spending. The results indicate the market for enterprise cloud storage is about to enter a period of rapid growth.

This survey reveals that one of those benefits is improved data protection–which remains a huge challenge in conventional, non-cloud environments, data management chief Bill Mann says of the studys results.

Once in the cloud, IT administrators seem to be satisfied that their data is protected. Four out of every five (86 percent) companies with data in the private cloud feel that it is adequately protected, while 73 percent of those with data in the public cloud feel their data is safe.

It is broadly acknowledged that cloud computing can offer many benefits to organizations that require more agile and cost-effective ways of delivering IT services, Mann says.

Capital Soars with Huge New International Street Art Murals

An Amazing Week in DF with Interesni Kazki, El Mac, Saner, Sego, Roa, Herakut, Vhils, and Escif

Gazing out at the sweep of metropolis that is modern Mexico City, youll have to catch your breath once in a while. A culture known for its historic public murals of the 20th Century, it appears a resurgence is at hand, but this time the muralists are international Street Artists, and the scale is soaring.

Escif (photo  courtesy of All City Canvas)

The project All City Canvas invited ten artists from around the world and locally to use some of Distrito Federals prime real estate as just that – a canvas. With cranes and rollers instead of ladders and cans, these are some of the largest works weve seen by some of these artists. Heres Portugals Vhils on the Dolores Building near La Alameda, theres Germanys Herakut on the side of the building that holds oldest newspaper in Mexico El Universal, and look way up to a signature portrait by LAs El Mac floating on the side of the Hotel Reforma Avenue.

After eleven months of work getting permission from building owners, scheduling artists, convincing city leaders, and securing major corporate sponsors, the capital of Mexico now has a few more major public art pieces that will blow you away and the resulting collection further secures this city of 21 million as one of the growing hubs of the Street Art scene.

ROA (photo  courtesy of All City Canvas)

We spoke with the three guys who organized the festival to get an understanding of the logistics and their aspirations for the project. As organizers and innovators with ties to their own arts organizations in Mexico City, this trio pulled together to present a street show that inspired a cross section of the citys art fans; Victor Hugo Celaya of ARTO, Roberto Shimizu of MUJAM, and Gonzalo Alvarez of MAMUTT. A solid mix of Street Artists whose work easily transitions to the world of fine art participated; Interesni Kazki (Ukraine), El Mac (USA), Saner (Mexico), Sego (Mexico), Roa (Belgium), Herakut (Germany), Vhils (Portugal) and Escif (Spain).

Brooklyn Street Art: Often Street Artists are relegated to the buildings that are abandoned and in a state of decay. In this case, your program featured work on the sides of some of the most important buildings in Mexico City. How did you get permission to do this?
Victor Hugo Celaya: Since the beginning, we wanted to offer an unique experience to the city and to bring urban art to everybody – youth, business people, doctors, moms… In order to make a huge impact, we worked to obtain the best spots in Mexico City. Each of these buildings is seen by thousands of people each day and are all located in the city center of Mexico City. It was a difficult job, but in the end we got everything set up. The impact would not have been the same if we had painted other walls.

ROA (photo  courtesy of All City Canvas)

Brooklyn Street Art: Mexican culture has a proud tradition of public murals. How does the style of Street Art in 2012 differ from that tradition?
Roberto Shimizu: Obviously the Mexican history with mural painters and our cultural background, with artists like David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera – played a big part while we were conceptualizing the project. Mexico City has the perfect moral background to invite the best urban artists in the world to use its walls to create huge murals. We wanted to innovate, to create a new link with the past with some of the renowned urban artists of our time.

Brooklyn Street Art: Did you have difficulty persuading building owners to allow this work on their property?
Gonzalo Alvarez: It was difficult to get to the owners, since many are important business people who dont have a lot of time. Nevertheless, after a lot of work and perseverance we got to show them the project. Once we got to them, we realized they are great people who were interested in getting involved in new innovative projects for the city. At the end, all of them were very happy with the outcome of the festival.

ROA. Detail. (photo  courtesy of All City Canvas)

Brooklyn Street Art: Is there a graffiti/Street Art scene in certain areas of DF?

Victor Hugo Celaya: DF is one of the biggest cities in the world – the 2nd biggest, so it is a natural hub for the urban art scene. The movement is very alive at the moment and it is giving Mexican artists an opportunity to show themselves to the world. With this project we wanted to make a statement to the world; that urban art is not only for young people that live in and around big cities – its for everybody – doctors, politicians, business people, moms, merchants… For example, the intervention of the W Hotel, which is located in one of the most posh neighborhoods in the country, was very disruptive because nobody could have imagined an urban artist painting a huge mural on the same terrace where they usually eat their lunch or have their business meetings.

SEGO (photo  courtesy of All City Canvas)

Brooklyn Street Art: In the last few years we have seen many international Street Artists traveling to large cities around the world doing commissioned work for local festival organizers. How do these traveling artists affect the art scene in the local Mexican context?
Gonzalo Alvarez: This was also very important to us when we were conceiving All City Canvas. First we wanted to show young artists that if you do a good job doing what you like, you can actually earn money and travel around the world. You can take your art to other cultures and if you are good enough, you could influence someone else.

Secondly, many artists in Mexico have no money to travel to other countries, and many of their influences come from the pictures they see on the Internet. To have these world-known urban artists in Mexico City was an unique opportunity for these young local artists to watch, compare and learn their techniques.

SEGO. Detail. (photo  courtesy of All City Canvas)

Brooklyn Street Art: Can you talk about the vibrant youth culture in Mexico City and how it responds to this kind of work?
Roberto Shimizu: Yes, Mexico is a young country, and more than half of the population is under 30 years of age. We noticed how important cultural events like this are for the young people. Each day thousands of young Mexicans congregated outside of the buildings the artists were painting – they wanted to watch the work and to understand the artistic process of the artwork. Also we offered a series of conferences called WORDS and a gallery exposition called WORKS to offer different points of view of the urban art scene. What we found is that young people in Mexico are very keen to learn and participate in these kinds of projects.

Also youll find that the feedback from the Mexican youth is very honest and direct. If you are doing something wrong they will let you know – also theyll let you know if you are doing something right.

LONDON, May 16, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
Verdasys,
the leading provider of Enterprise
Information Protection (EIP) solutions for the Global 2000, today
announced the immediate availability of the company’s managed Data Loss
Prevention services in Europe. The two new offerings, Verdasys Managed
Service for Information Protection (MSIP) and Verdasys Information
Protection as a Service (IPaaS), provide businesses on-demand data
protection technology hosted within Verdasys’ secured European
facilities.

MSIP offers a fully-managed EIP solution hosted, supported, and
maintained by Verdasys experts; IPaaS allows end users to deploy and
manage their own enterprise data policies with no additional setup or
infrastructure costs. The first enterprise data loss prevention
solutions to be offered as managed
services, MISP and IPaaS were initially announced in January in the
United States, and are now rolling out throughout Europe.

Since 2003, more than 200 Global 2000 customers and government agencies
around the world have trusted Verdasys to help implement successful
enterprise data
protection programs. With its MSIP and IPaaS offerings, Verdasys
delivers more options to help companies minimize the cost of data
security by combining its proven experience deploying enterprise
solutions with the ease and flexibility of a managed service.

The technology behind both MSIP and IPaaS is Digital
Guardian, the flagship data protection platform solution from
Verdasys. With its layered, contextual risk insight and data-centric
policy enforcement, Digital Guardian offers complete protection of
intellectual property, trade secrets and privacy data in highly
collaborative and regulated industries. As the foundation of Verdasys’
managed services, the Digital Guardian hosted solution represents a
faster and simpler time-to-value for companies implementing enterprise
DLP, and offers a much lower total cost of ownership (TCO) compared to
less functional technologies that require large investments in hardware,
software, and headcount to operationalize.

“We are excited to extend our managed service offerings to European
companies that are under pressure to maintain current security staffing
levels and need to show faster time to project value,” said Verdasys CEO
Jim Ricotta. “In addition, we offer European workers privacy protection
unique to Digital Guardian; no collection of personal data, but instead
collection of descriptive event data, anonymization of all users, events
and machines and real-time education of workers to risky activities to
protect them from violating company policies. We see a tremendous
potential for the managed services model to help European clients
implement advanced information protection which can cost-effectively
manage the biggest risks to their critical data,” Ricotta added.

MSIP and IPaaS customers are provided Digital Guardian management
servers hosted in secure and high-availability Verdasys facilities, and
can either be administered by Verdasys (MSIP) or by the user’s security
team (IPaaS). With Digital Guardian’s tamper-resistant agents, encrypted
agent-to-server communications, and configurable forensics capture, no
actual customer data is transmitted to the hosting environment in order
to provide full risk analysis, alerting, and reporting. Both hosted
solutions continuously monitor data, application, and system access and
usage whether end users are online, offline, or in virtual environments,
and applies their company’s specific risk-based policy controls to
adhere to data governance and compliance rules without impeding normal
business operations.

The Verdasys MSIP and IPaaS solutions are available immediately; prices
per month per endpoint are based on a volume curve. Specific pricing
information is available from Verdasys Sales, euemail@verdasys.com.

“LET me tell you something,” said the artist K8 Hardy, a star of the current Whitney Biennial, whose work typically subverts common conceptions of fashion and consumerism.

“You can’t burn a bra anymore.”

Working in her studio near the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn this week, Ms. Hardy was completing a 30-piece fashion collection using mostly found garments and recycled items, including a corsetlike top made entirely of bras, some scorched by a blowtorch, which have been sewn together into a lumpy shape that would probably appeal to Rei Kawakubo.

Her designs (sculptures, really) will make their runway debut in two shows at the museum on Sunday afternoon, using models from agencies like IMG and Women. The catwalk is designed by Oscar Tuazon, whose modular structures have occupied the lobby gallery during the Biennial.

It might be considered problematic that an artist of Ms. Hardy’s background, the founder of a queer feminist art collective and before that a stylist, would be stymied by intimates that just don’t burn the way they used to. Those made of synthetic fibers simply melted into liquid form.

But it is not Ms. Hardy’s habit to over-analyze her work, other than to note that turning a fashion show into an artwork might provoke some interesting reactions. Her admittedly curious designs (Miguel Adrover is on her mood board) will be shown in a context normally used to create desire for luxury items. Only these items, some as tacky as a bridesmaid dress with purple flowers and hair curlers glued to the back, are not for sale. Ms. Hardy wants viewers to question more broadly how their clothes are made, how they dress themselves, even their ideas about taste.

“I’m interested in shifting the frame,” she said. “You will be able to examine the elements of a show a little bit better by freeing up the thoughts of ‘what if I could buy’ or ‘what if I could wear’ these clothes.”

With the crew involved, it should look like a real show. MAC and Bumble and bumble are sponsoring the makeup (by James Kaliardos) and hair (towering wigs by Duffy). There will also be a press section, though, Ms. Hardy cautioned, no front row.

“I’m not going to play that game,” she said.

PROTECT YOUR FAMILY AND PETS

The Worcester County Health Department recommends several things you can do to protect your family and pets from exposure to rabies:

#187; Have your dogs, cats and ferrets vaccinated regularly and keep those vaccinations current in accordance with the law.

#187; Never let your pets roam freely.

#187; Avoid feeding your animals outside because it draws stray and wild animals to your doorstep. Cover your garbage cans securely.

#187; Avoid sick animals or those acting in an unusual manner. Teach your children not to approach wild animals and animals they dont know.

#187; If your pet has contact with a wild animal, report the incident immediately to the health department or your local police in order to arrange testing. Do not touch the animal.

I was the 3rd car to hit the horse shown in the last picture above. I will say that this was an accident that felt out of a horror movie. Wrong place, wrong time. I feel sorry for the horse owner as well being a horse lover myself but i wish more precautions would have been made. However it was not my fault or wreckless driving that caused this or the damage. No matter if I was going 40mph or the speed limit or weather there was a tree in the road I could have hit, there was no avoiding it. I am thankful my son was not with me and I am thankful I will eventually recover from this (i hope) unlike others. Unfortunately my family will suffer mentally and financially from this and I feel there is a root to all problems, it could have been avoided and there is a reason you have insurance on vehicles and animals. If you cant keep your animals safe after the second accurance and lives have been lost, someone should pay. Horrible for all parties and condolences/prayers for the the 1st vehicle This could have been me. Im sure many more nightmares will follow this day I will never forget.

CAMPBELL, Calif., May 16, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
Responding to the growing trend of data being created, consumed and
stored on mobile devices that are not controlled by IT, Soonr, a leader
in secure
business cloud services that transforms tablets like the iPad into
business productivity tools, today announced Soonr Enterprise to help
solve the mobile enterprise challenges large organizations are facing.

“Soonr is helping our global sales organization fully exploit the power
of its smart devices — transforming its tablets and smartphones into
reliable alternatives to carrying a laptop,” said Al Lounsbury,
director of Digital Tools, Corporate Marketing at Ciena. “They can
access core content to do business – whether they are documents,
presentations or videos – and work on them seamlessly and securely
within the cloud infrastructure.”

Soonr
Enterprise builds upon its existing enterprise grade infrastructure
and services that have been in continuous operation since 2005, now
serving over 120,000 businesses globally.

Business units and Teams want easy access to content across mobile
devices, while their IT counterparts want to ensure that access to
sensitive information is secured and controlled according to corporate
policies. IT professionals have genuine concerns about the extreme
security risks of unmanaged cloud services and are issuing legitimate
warnings about a lack of controls, capabilities, reporting and
integration. Even so, business units are being rapidly drawn to what
tablets and mobile devices can give them — agility, ubiquity and
simplicity.

“IT needs to provide corporately endorsed solutions that are easy for
individuals to use, but provide IT with security, control and
accountability,” said Terri McClure, senior analyst with Enterprise
Strategy Group (ESG). “With the Consumerization and mobilization trends,
IT has some real interesting challenges with data and compliance issues
on end-user mobile devices. IT needs vendors like Soonr to help address
these data access and collaboration challenges in the enterprise because
they are not going away.”

Soonr understands the complexity of security and compliance issues
facing today’s IT departments and their requirements for managing cloud
services. Soonr’s services run over a purpose-built, enterprise-grade
infrastructure that relies on geo-redundant data centers in major
regions that delivers better than 99.9 percent uptime with
industry-leading response and service restoral time guarantees. Security
of customer information is assured with 256-bit AES encryption of data
in transit and storage with dynamic key rotation, virus scanning, and
firewalls against hacking attacks. Role-based access controls, password
protection and expiration timers for share links, and inactivity session
timers deliver best-in-class user security. Finally, encryption of all
local session information and non-persistent use of login credentials
provide critical protection against lost or stolen devices.

“It’s an issue that every large organization has to come to grips with —
and it is not an easy one,” said Martin Frid-Nielsen, co-founder and CEO
of Soonr. “But we’ve come up with a solution that helps CIOs and their
IT departments to navigate the divide between security and ingenuity.
The last thing you want to do is hold your company back from effective
sale approaches — and the modern ways of doing business — because of
fear.”

The new capabilities being announced today are designed to expand the
level of control enterprise IT is able to exert over users, devices and
the documents that are part of the cloud
collaboration environment under IT management. These include the
ability to create and manage Groups from global team lists with custom
share permissions, which reflects how Projects are actually managed in
large companies. Both users and Groups may now be imported from
enterprise Active Directory databases so that adding individuals to
Projects with the right permissions is fully automated, saving time and
reducing mistakes when multiple systems have to be configured.

New Policy Management capabilities allow the enterprise IT Admin to
access all Projects users may have created with the ability to view,
search, edit and delete Projects, as well as to control how Projects are
shared with other employees or external parties. These new controls
enable businesses to be in compliance with industry regulations or
lawful access requirements.

Advanced reports and audit trails about user, group, device, and
Project-related activities provide a rich set of tools that can be used
for business analytics, such as determining how Projects and documents
are being used, or for diagnostic, compliance, or security purposes.

Pricing, Support and Availability

The Soonr Enterprise Plan will be generally available on June 4, 2012.
