Last week the fundraising committee at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church chose to give the proceeds from its barbecue sale to the Empty Stocking Fund.

Larry Black, chairman of deacons, said the church started having fundraisers to raise money for its building program. Now that the building is completed, they still do the fundraiser, but all the money is donated to someone else.

We have a good time doing it and it is even more fun when you are doing it for someone else, Black said. We give all the money away.

The fundraiser helps families in need two ways. Church members get the names of families from the social worker at Fallston Elementary and a contact at Shelby High School. They cook Boston butts and give the meat to the families. This year they gave away between 30 and 35 butts. And the money raised from the event $747.06 was given to the Empty Stocking Fund.

We wanted some families to have something for Christmas and kids to have something under the tree, Black said.

Thank you Pleasant Grove for the work you do to give hope to struggling families. And, thanks to everyone who has given to the Empty Stocking Fund this year. Because of your generosity, we eclipsed the goal of $20,000 and are inching closer to $30,000.

Can you help us make it? If you havent given yet, theres still time. We will be taking donations for a few days after Christmas and all donations will be used by the Greater Cleveland County Baptist Association to keep spreading joy to families in the New Year.
