Mater Dei team heads into Trinity League play with a 2-3 record.
The Monarchs first five games have been interesting. Their three losses to start the season were by four, eight and seven points, respectively.
Their first victory came on a last-second touchdown pass against Edison.
Last Friday, the Monarchs closed the nonleague schedule with a 52-16 walloping of Gardena.
Now, as Coach Bruce Rollinson said Friday, it is fish-or-cut-bait time.
Mater Dei begins Trinity League play Thursday against Santa Margarita, ranked No. 2 in the county this week.
A lot of attention has been placed on first-year quarterback Ryan McMahon. McMahon, a junior, has completed 74 of 130 passes (56.9 percent) for 952 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions.
The standout moment was his 80-yard game-winning drive against Edison without any timeouts.
He had very little to do Friday against Gardena, but he still completed four of five passes for 147 yards and one touchdown.
Now the fun starts.
He still has a ways to go, but it is going to be about his confidence and about him being able to manage the offense, Rollinson said of McMahon. You cant hold back. Were going to have to give him the (offensive) package and hope that hes going to be able to handle it and I believe that he is.
bull; Foothill quarterback Jack Gilchrist entered Fridays game against Esperanza with the Knights trailing, 24-7. He led Foothill to four touchdown drives and a 35-31 victory.
The Knights trailed by 10 when Gilchrist connected with Jake Dupre on a 56-yard touchdown pass. Gilchrist later tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to Noah Stillman with 1:36 left.
bull; Liberty Christian was scheduled to face Eastside Christian this week. However, since Eastside Christian does not have a team this season, the Minutemen have a bye.
Liberty Christian will return to action on Oct. 21 against Capistrano Valley Christian.
bull; Laguna Beach kicker Robbie McInerny set a single-season school record when he made all eight of his extra point attempts in a 56-14 victory over Jurupa Hills of Mira Loma on Friday.
McInerny has made 34 PATs, breaking the previous record of 30 by Steve Wiezbowski set in 1968.
The Breakers improved to 5-0 with the victory, their best start since 2001.
bull; More Laguna Beach record updates: Drake Martinez has 15 touchdowns this season. The school record is 20, set by Bill O Brien in 1956 and tied by Donelle Darling in 2001.
bull; The Servite-Orange Lutheran Trinity League opener on Friday will be televised live on Fox Sports West. The game will be played at Cerritos College.
The Vista Murrieta-Chaparral game was originally scheduled to be aired, but that game will now available online at foxsportswest.com/prepzone.
bull; Here is my top 10 vote this week: 1. Servite; 2. Santa Margarita; 3. Orange Lutheran; 4. San Clemente; 5. Mission Viejo; 6. Los Alamitos; 7. Mater Dei; 8. La Habra; 9. Edison; 10. Trabuco Hills.
