BARRIE There wont be any skates at the Barrie Molson Centre tonight, but there will definitely be some body slamming.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) brings its exciting brand of entertainment to the BMC with a line-up of Superstars usually found Monday nights on the companys flagship show, Raw. The usual list of entertainers are scheduled to be on hand, including WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio, John Cena, The Miz, Jack Swagger, R-Truth and the Tag Team Champions Air Boom.
One half of the high-flying Air Boom is Kofi Kingston (his partner is Evan Bourne).
Kofi has been a member of the WWE since 2006. Born in Ghana, West Africa, Kofis family moved to America in search for the American Dream. That dream became sports-entertainment for the future WWE Superstar. Growing up idolizing the likes of Ricky Steamboat and The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, Kofi vowed that he would perform like them one day. Whether its performing in front 50,000 or 10,000 fans, Kofi always brings his fun personality and strong work ethic.
For us its not about the size of the crowd that matters, said Kofi. We try to put on the best show possible for everyone who came out after spending their hard earned money to see us.
All the lights and pyrotechnics on television helps fans forget that the life of a WWE Superstar isnt always easy and glamorous. Working five nights a week for 52 weeks a year, Kofi was just touching down at home in Tampa. Tonight is the show in Barrie; Saturday he is off to London and then Monday Night Raw is taking place in Ottawa.
The busy Kofi is excited about coming to Canada though, saying the fans are always a pleasure to perform in front of.
Canada is really cool because we make it there only a handful of dates all year and the fans get really excited to see us.
Kofis fans are mainly young children and parents who enjoy his always-smiling face and responsible attitude towards performing in front of families. Things may have been a bit different for the Ghanaian born superstar had he debuted with the company during the Attitude Era that lasted from 1995 to 2001. These were the days that saw blood, multiple chair shots, foul language and scantily clad women. Kofi is proud of the PG era he is a part of and knows his role for the fans.
The WWE has evolved, and I feel for the better, said Kofi. I enjoy looking out and seeing fathers with their sons and mothers who may not otherwise bond with their children any other way but with our brand of entertainment.
Although Kofi has held various singles titles in his WWE career, he is enjoying being a tag team champion and is looking forward to Air Boom successfully defending those titles against The Miz and R-Truth on Friday.
As long as Im winning, Im happy, said Kofi.
The show takes place tonight, Sept. 9 at the BMC with a 7:30 pm start time.
Tickets can be bought at at the WWE website.
